GEORGIAN MINE CAPTAINS HOUSE
1

Situated within the Mining Landscape World Heritage Site, this historic Georgian Mine Captain’s House was and still is a building and restoration project.

Until it was bought in 2019, this Period House – a part of the rich mining history located on the Tregothnan Estate – had been abandoned and left derelict.

Throughout this project, a total third of the house had to be rebuilt from scratch. Almost all the historical features had to be carefully reinstated, using either sensitive remodelling or removal and restoration. The result is a warm, beautiful house, rich in history and yet comfortable for everyday life.

The finished family home feels historically rich and sensitively restored, while also providing the comfort and practicality for everyday living. Selven Build were able to carry out much of the project in-house, sourcing high-quality, local materials and contractors, securing this home’s modern future in its historical setting for years to come.

The following work was carried out for the restoration of the Mine Captain’s House:

• Floors across the ground and first floor were levelled, and the floor plan was reconfigured to suit modern family life, rationalised down from seven to five comfortable bedrooms.

• Modern, insulated, underfloor heating installed throughout the ground floor.

• All external walls were re-pointed and inside, upgraded with high-tech, multi foil quilt insultation, providing the house with modern levels of insulation to make it more energy efficient.

• The ground floor was fitted with locally sourced natural black slate tiles, which were skilfully treated to give them a worn, authentic look.

• A bespoke, fully fitted kitchen was installed – complete with an electric aga, pantry and modern extractor system.

• The central staircase was deconstructed for restoration; during which the original handrails were fully restored, and direct copies of the banisters and stairs made my local joiners. The staircase was then reinstalled in its original place.

• All early regency plasterwork was painstakingly restored in-house, including the copy casting over 40 components.
