Addition in Point, Devoran

ADDITION IN POINT, DEVORAN
1

Situated overlooking the historic Point Quay, Devoran, this project involved a modern, view-filled addition to a much older house.

The original house, built in about 1905, sits on the promontory where Penpol Creek joins Restronguet. Until Devoran was built in the 19th century, Point’s Quay acted as a busy docking point and was also the site of a customs house and, later, a smelting works.

It is thought that bricks from the latter industry were repurposed to build the (at the time), cutting edge cavity brick walls of this home, which now sits on the same site, with views overlooking the creek.

The addition to the house was managed entirely by Selven Build, and was also carried out in absence of the homeowners, during the Covid-19 pandemic. The extension was designed to add a modern twist along the frontage of the house, following an angle that would blend it into the lineage of its Creekside frontage.

Initial work uncovered an historic culvert running under the corner of the building, this complicated the structural works and necessitated a designed underpinning and support solution.

The pandemic also meant that most of the work for this addition was done either in-house or through local contractors managed by Selven Build.

The final build included:

• A modern refurbishment (including increased insulation, underfloor heating, a complete rewire and replumb) of the original house.

• A modern addition, sensitive to the original house, with bifold doors, glass balustrade and slate patio.

• The finishing touch to this home was the installation of a pair of ‘Port and Starboard’ lights, fitted either side of the door, to help the owners navigate the journey home from the Pandora Inn by boat! The house now enjoys better energy efficiency and warmth, and makes the most of its uninterrupted creek views.
